an underlying turbulence (2023)

exploring the notion of “metallurgy” (a term used to describe the anthropocentric history and relational entanglement with metal resource extraction and implementation), an underlying turbulence produces a generative narrative that speaks to the underlying relations between radio-absorbent metal infrastructure, their geospatial positioning, geological origin and materially active properties.

the production involved a journey on foot from the Malaysia-Singapore second link to the Johor-Singapore causeway (the two causeways that connect Malaysia to Singapore). considering these sites as openings that facilitate massive flows of matter, energy and dialogue (approximately 400,000 people cross these bridges everyday), the 33km consistent walking/ running route across the Singapore mainland was interrupted only to visually (via LiDAR scanning) and sonically (via sub-AM radio wave field recordings) document metal objects that absorb radio waves and establish nodes of networked dialogue exchange of their own.

strapped with equipment in a backpack, signposts, grates, scaffolding, electrical boxes and various metallic public infrastructure storing untapped radio-signals were recorded across the journey and gathered together to form a metallurgical dialogue facilitated by their conductive, absorbent and reflective properties.
